abstract
Ocular trauma from fishing sinkers is a significant yet underrecognized issue, particularly with the growing popularity of commercial fishing ponds and fishing competitions. This report presents two cases of ocular injuries caused by fishing sinkers.
Case 1 involves a 37-year-old male who sustained severe vision impairment and anterior segment complications after being struck by a fishing sinker during a fishing competition.
Case 2 describes a 5-year-old child with both anterior and posterior segment injuries, including reduced vision due to retinal edema (Berlin’s edema), after his left eye was accidentally hit by a fishing sinker at a commercial fishing pond.
These cases underscore the clinical implications for the patients, including the risk of long-term visual impairment, and highlight the public health concerns associated with the increasing prevalence of commercial fishing ponds. Enhanced safety measures and greater public awareness are critical to preventing such avoidable injuries.
